Mozartians,Beethovians, and the Teaching of Writing

I like Donald Murray's idea of teaching our students how to teach themselves to write. We need to provide them with the tools and strategies, of course, but we should let them take it from there.

I also like Boehm's use of the Mozart and Beethoven analogy. I think I am a Beethovian because I don't always know what I want to say until I start writing. As a teacher I want my students, Beethovians, Mozartians, and Combinations, to be free to follow their own path.

I grew up in an era where everything was taught as a logical, step-by-step process. I guess we were all left-brained, even those of us who were really right-brained. I'm glad that pendulum has swung.
